Profile

born 1972
lives Sydney, NSW

Melinda Young has a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours (1999) and a Master of Visual Arts both from Sydney College of the Arts (2002) as well as a Graduate Diploma of Education from Charles Sturt University (2006).

She has participated in over 75 exhibitions in Australia and overseas since 1997. Her practice embraces ornamentation, pattern, colour and surface texture and spans one-off exhibition pieces, bespoke commissions and a production range, which is sold through several outlets around Australia.

Her works often take the form of colour studies, having the potential to tell a range of stories. She is fascinated by the social condition of the body and the narrative evoked by objects. For her, everything is precious, even the ephemeral - it is the story behind it - that marker of time, place and experience that creates meaning and value. Her surroundings provide continual inspiration, and often materials for her work, from the things she finds on the ground to architecture, textiles, the landscape and the body.

In addition to her jewellery practice, Melinda teaches and has worked at several contemporary craft and design galleries, she also curates exhibitions and writes about jewellery and craft practice.
