Profile

born Japan 1954
lives Hunter Valley, NSW

Although trained as a painter, I was drawn to the unique qualities of glass.  I enjoy creating the harmony of colour in transparent and versatile textures and shapes, reflecting the landscape. It is the ‘wilderness’ in glass that intrigues me – the depth, the possibilities. The magic starts when the glass is nothing and from that nothing, by glassblowing, I can achieve beauty.  It is it is physical work, but the act also has to be in harmony with the heart and the brain.

Japanese art and culture are still important influences in my work.  However, living on the land with the Australian bush at the door of my studio, extends my creative view – the landscape is not only a source of creativity in itself but a source of joy to me.
SETSUKO OGISHI 2007

Ogishi trained as a painter at the Kanazawa College of Arts, Japan, before moving to Australia in 1981. She studied glassblowing at the Jam factory Craft Centre in Adelaide with the assistance of a grant from the Australia-Japan Foundation. In 1987 Ogishi, with her husband Yutaka Mizuno, set up their first glass studio in Wollombi, NSW. They then moved and established the Ogishi Craft Centre in the Hunter Valley, NSW. Ogishi initiated the Lovedale Limited Edition Expo in 2004 to showcase the talents of local artists and craftspeople.
