born 1947, Sydney, NSW
lives in Morisset, NSW

Judy Hooworth lives in Morisset on the south-western edge of Lake Macquarie. Dora Creek flows nearby and she often walks along the creek and its surrounding bushland.  She is interested in the patterns created by the movement of water and the subtle day-to-day changes in the tidal flow and is also a keen birdwatcher.  Colours in her environment are variable and sometimes dramatic; the light is soft and the mood is often ephemeral. The moodiness reflects her own emotions in many ways as she continues to discover the intricacies of the landscape and her responses to it.

Judy is well known here and overseas as an artist, teacher, curator, writer and lecturer. She studied at the National Art school 1963-66 and began making patchwork quilts and stitched textiles not long after. She has exhibited in major national and international shows, and has received many awards and prizes for her quilts. Her work is featured in numerous publications and she has written three books on contemporary quiltmaking. She is represented in public and private collections in Australia, UK, and USA including the Tamworth Regional Gallery and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. She was awarded the Quilters’ Guild NSW Inc Study Scholarship 1994 and a Professional Development Grant from the Visual Arts/Crafts Fund of the Australia Council 1995.
